creative placemaking

Scenario

ArtPlace America has invested close to $100M over the past 10 years in art and design integrated community development projects (public space, housing, workforce development, education, parks, health, transportation, etc.) The 12 foundations that have supported ArtPlace America are thinking about investing another $100M.   But they want to see some evidence and want to deploy data and analysis to help drive future investments.   The foundations (who make up your board of directors) are willing to invest several million in the data project.

problem definition

Artplace America has invested $100 million in an integrated community development project, which seeks to find evidence and push ahead with the project through data and analysis to make additional investments. Here, it is necessary to draw conclusions on what analysis is needed to successfully attract projects and which projects will create long-term sustainable investments.

contextual Data

Due to the integrated community development project through art, the dying community can provide legitimate evidence to the decision maker with examples of positive and good effects again. For the purpose of community rehabilitation, several project trends are presented in the direction that both stakeholders and community people can get what they want. What ranks the most is to generate more synergy effects compared to investment costs. The second is community development through projects.

Hypothesis

  •  A good model might let us use much more data.

For example, models have the potential to meet all three of our needs with more effort. Model verification allows you to see if the relationship is plausible, detect outliers to find apartments at the wrong price, and run the model with fake data to predict the future.
Therefore, by analyzing a successful project representative model, we can identify commonalities and strengths of each and bring a lot of data.

Variables

The environmental and cultural characteristics of the place can be divided into variables. Because a specific environment is formed in every region, and only small but special local culture will be created. So these variables can create synergy and produce better results, but because they are variables, they may face unexpected headwinds. Therefore, not all data are 100% appropriate examples for the project area. Considering this, it is necessary to identify variables and establish plans suitable for the region.

  • The frequency of events held in the region.

  • Is there a specific art and culture gathering place in the region?

  • What are some geographical features?

  • What is the community's perception of culture and arts?

  • A survey is needed on programs where people can participate in art.

  • Is there a unique story in the community?

Data Collection Methods & Measurements

1. Research on experience data through surveys.
It consists of receiving responses from community people based on variables and assumptions defined by the researcher. Through this, it is possible to evaluate the right and wrong hypotheses to some extent through statistical verification. However, there may be difficulties in controlling the measurement method and the experimental environment, which may cause errors. In addition, there may be experiences that experienced people are aware of.

2. Experience study through interviews and observations.
Through interviews, we directly investigate opinions, observe the actual appearance, and investigate a series of environments and contexts together. It can deal with private and sensitive content or investigate what people are not aware of.

3. Collection of environmental data that shows regional characteristics.
This can be said to be close data collection for community revival. It is easy to secure environmental characteristic data and identify the collective culture formed by it. However, even if you understand cultural characteristics well, attempts to change for the revival of the community can face cultural barriers.

results

For the revival of the community, the starting point of good urban design is that it leads the place as much as it provides social value through a flexible and adaptable space that fixes projects to existing living environments, responds to local needs, creates and resists social interactions. The main goal can be to identify community needs through data and provide better space for them. The basics of data include identifying needs in community living spaces, the possibility of incorporating art, and an effective art method using space.

limitation

The expected limitation is that it may be difficult to identify cultural characteristics that converge on community revival. There may also be persuading community people. When interests are not established, people in the community may have a lot of worries and opposition in that their region should be "changed." It is necessary to coordinate the middle. It should be emphasized that finding ways for art to approach people in the community and closely connecting art culture to their cultural revival have a very positive effect.

priority

Space is for community people, so you should prioritize what you measure. This is because the success measure of the project comes from their satisfaction. Of course, the opinions of decision makers are important, but I think it's a way to satisfy the two interests while keeping the budget because it's also a project for the community.

1. Community

2. Budget
3. Interests are established
